What is it?
Parametrically designed 3d surface + generative projection mapping = Final Project
The idea of this project is to combine a parametrically designed 3dimensional surface with generative projection mapping using touchDesigner.
The inspiration for the 3d surface came from artist Joanie Lemercier, who recently shared the example of the triangles as a fun project to kill time during the quarantine. I would like to build on this, by creating a multi-line attractor in grasshopper definition in grasshopper and then using that to generate the final layout of the shapes. These will most likely be made out of paper and adhered to foam-core or coroplast, and I’ll use a projector to get a proper alignment on the mounting surface. If this doesn’t produce an interesting result, I would work on creating an interesting 3d surface in grasshopper, and then using the unfold command to print the complex surface in 2 dimensions, and then refold it to form the 3d shape.
Once the model is complete, I’ll upload it to touch designer and use it as the base for the 3d projection mapping, allowing an almost perfect map, and embedding the geometry direction into program.
I haven’t really figured out what the generative mapping part will look like, and having never used touch designer, know that there will be a giant learning curve. However, I hope that the projection will continue to explore my interest in particle systems, and have somehow enhance or change the existing 3dimensional shape.
Another option to explore would be using vvvv for the mapping and content part. From what I understand it is also node based and very similar to grasshopper.
